It was subsequently destroyed by fire caused by an uprising of the indigenous population, re-established in 1527 and entirely buried as a result of earthquakes and an avalanche in 1541. The third location, in the Valley of Panchoy, was inaugurated in March 1543 and served for 230 years. It survived natural disasters of floods, volcanic eruptions and other serious tremors until 1773 when the Santa Marta earthquakes destroyed much of the town. At this point, authorities ordered the relocation of the capital to a safer location region, which became Guatemala City, the county’s modern capital. Some residents stayed behind in the original town, however, which became referred to as La Antigua Guatemala.

However, Antigua remains our primary location for cultural activities and leisure options, making it a popular choice for those interested in the Antigua Guatemala medical internship and other educational programs.

Originally, Ciudad Vieja was a neighborhood inhabited by the Tlaxcalans, descendants of those who accompanied Don Pedro de Alvarado upon his arrival in 1524, settling in the area now known as San Miguel Escobar.

Due to the natural disasters caused by the Agua Volcano and its frequent devastation of the city, the settlers found it necessary to relocate to a safer area, which is where Antigua Guatemala stands today.

I had one-week wonderful classes with Amanda. She is well versed in Kachiquel and Mayan cultures, especially those of traditional clothes and its patterns. We learned the history of Guatemala and how Mayans were repressed. We also talked about the traditional Mayan stories and the worldview behind them. I started reading Menchu’s book to know more about the civil war and how it impacted the indigenous communities. It was not only a Spanish class but also a class that gave me a deeper understanding of the indigenous cultures here. I highly recommend Amanda as your teacher if you are interested in indigenous cultures, Mayan rituals and stories.
