Easter in Guatemala: A Celebration of
Faith and Tradition
Easter is the most important celebration in Guatemala, a country with deep Christian traditions. The entire nation eagerly awaits this time of year to express devotion and participate in the rich Easter events.
Guatemala’s Easter celebrations are a unique fusion of Mayan and Spanish traditions, reflecting the sorrow of Christ’s passion, death, and resurrection. Processions are held throughout the country, drawing thousands of participants and making it one of the largest Easter celebrations in the world.
The devotion of the Guatemalan people is evident both inside and outside the churches. One of the most striking traditions is the creation of “huertos”, or sawdust carpets, beautifully decorated with flowers and fruits. These intricate carpets line the streets during the processions, creating a breathtaking display of faith and artistry.
