In April 2011, I had the opportunity to attend Spanish immersion classes at the Spanish Academy Ciudad Vieja in Antigua Guatemala. It was a mind-blowing experience, and the school welcomed me like family. My instructor, Señora Olga, was exceptional. The Spanish Academy Ciudad Vieja itself is wonderful, and I felt completely safe and at home there. Through their immersive Spanish language immersion program, I learned more Spanish than I ever expected to in such a short time. I had a wonderful week of Spanish immersion classes with Amanda at the Spanish Academy Ciudad Vieja in Antigua Guatemala. She is well versed in Kachiquel and Mayan cultures, particularly in traditional clothing and its patterns. During our lessons, we explored the history of Guatemala and the repression faced by the Mayans. We also discussed traditional Mayan stories and the worldview behind them. I started reading Menchu’s book to learn more about the civil war and its impact on indigenous communities. This experience was not only a Spanish language immersion but also a deep dive into the indigenous cultures here. I highly recommend Amanda as your teacher if you are interested in indigenous cultures, Mayan rituals, and stories, especially if you are looking for Spanish for travelers.
